- AUSMEAT, caused huge problems – Korea liked meat in a particular colour bag, Ausmeat dictated another colour, AQIS Rejected a whole consignment because not in right bags, Korea rejected other colour bags and lost whole market1

Difficulty in re-establishment of this plant even though seemingly so much is still in place.
- Some equipment is gone from inside the abattoir, plate freezing facilities, some specialised equipment from the slaughter floor, boning and packing rooms.
- Technology is so out of date whole abattoir requires gutting, Ausmeat, CL, computerised technology and processing facility efficiency. Had assesments done for gas/refrigeration for Katherine and Batchalor – Batchalor was most feasible32.
- Feasiblity of Katherine estimates $40,000 a day just to run32.
- I would doubt that government would give permission to allow the abs to restart due to close proximity to the urban areas of Katherine.
- Effluent ponds and much of the outside landscape is changed too or removed. To meet Environmental requirements doubt if would be able to obtain permission.
- reportedly $20M to meet current AQIS requirements, unsure as to what capacity this was intended. Says needed substantial investment from government for water, electricity and gas supplies.

Very valuable information listed. Why not seeking overseas investors to put money in this very promising abattoir located at the center of variety feral?
The facility is quiet dated now and even though it looks like alot of infrastructure is there, Most is obsolete. Infact it would take a complete internal refurbishment to have it established as a facility that met the required standards of processing for government requirements now, then there is the computerised management systems which simply didn’t exist when Katherine abattoir was last processing. The external features like settling ponds have all been filled in and also due to current standards would require to be all built from scratch. With the current environmental issues and standards of facilities required now I don’t think approval would be obtainable for waste management and water protection purposes. The New facility built in Darwin now (Livingstone) will be an important tool for producers to use in the area, smaller abattoirs wouldn’t be able to compete against it. The location of abattoirs along way from ports of places where their product is retailed is an important cost factor in transport and was one of the main factors that the Katherine abattoir eventually closed. These days those costs have increased expotentially and so have the difficulties in procuring labour in small towns with not alot of services on offer. There are some smaller abattoirs operating on aboriginal owned properties which process some buffalo for communty food purposes and supply to domestic retail shops in Australia. Jo
